A well-designed and properly constructed drain field should last 25–30 years or longer. Factors affecting lifespan include soil type, seasonal water table, usage (heavier usage causes faster soil clogging), maintenance (regular tank pumping reduces strain on the field), and whether the field was properly sized initially. Fields that are undersized or poorly maintained may fail in 15–20 years.

Depends on the failure type. If the problem is a clogged inlet line to the field, hydro jetting may clear it. If the field soil itself has become clogged or compacted (the most common failure mode), replacement is usually the only permanent fix.
